Does this piss anyone else off? “Mum of two makes £250k business deal”, “Birmingham mum wins discrimination payout”, “mum of four buys grocery store”. It’s not fucking relevant and they obviously have other things going on in their lives that have nothing to do with their reproductive abilities, that presumably were worth writing about in the first place. I never see male football players being described as “dad of four scores winning goal”, or male doctors being described with “dad invents new medical device”.
It’s patronising, it minimises women to being baby makers, and it’s a cheap and shitty way to garner emotions for the subject, when the emotion should be coming from their achievement or note-worthy experience. It frankly seems like the sign of a poor writer who can’t produce emotive or interesting work. Newspapers must hire plenty of “mum of two”s by this point, so why is it still normal to write like this?
