The amount of men who are no longer interested in me when they find out I’m not of high school age…

This has happened to me multiple times as a young passing 20 year old. My most recent experience involved me in a not so nice place downtown bird watching when I was stopped by a middle aged man. He was asking me about what I was doing, and I was kindly explaining the organization I was volunteering for, etc. A seemingly harmless conversation.

I felt a little uncomfortable, I don’t like automatically judging people but some people just give you off vibes, you know? I kept trying to end the conversation and leave as my partner was waiting for me at our meeting spot, to which he would step in front of me or grab my arm to continue talking. He was commenting on my looks, saying how I shouldn’t be walking through this area alone , and then the big age question came up.

“So how old are you, you must have just finished highschool?” To which I responded “I’m actually going into my fourth year of university.” The look on his face changed INSTANTLY and within a minute the conversation was over and I was on my way.

Like wow, no words for this. The fact that men are turned off by woman who are actually of age makes my stomach turn. I’ve had this conversation with multiple friends now to which almost all of them say they got hit on/cat called way more when they were in highschool or younger compared to now, and the more I think about it the more I believe that’s true for myself. I think it might be time to start telling creepy men off by saying “I’m 23” rather than “I’m 16.” Just feeling a bit yucky thinking about that…
